I found this video two weeks ago or so, it's a little bit long but I think it's worth watching. Makes you wonder if we could ever truly create artificial intelligence. Not just robots or human-like contraptions, I mean actual intelligence, beings that can learn and think for their own... develop personalities, feel fear, and fall in love. But let's suppose that we can create intelligence, then we would have, as humans, created another sort of species to share our planet Earth with. Could we live together in harmony? Have equal rights?
Artificial intelligence is so fascinating to think about...
I feel like there are two standpoints for the argument of is artificial intelligence possible? The first being religious, where the answer is no, because living species and their abilities are a devine creation, and can not be replicated. Then a non-religious standpoint which just comes down to opinion. I belive it is possible, humans have progressed so far in a mere 100years, can you imagine what will be possible in a few thousands? I believe that it isnt a matter of if it will be possible, but rather when.
ReplyDeleteWhen artificial sentience is possible, there will be a huge controversy. As Kevin said, many religions would have conflicts with the idea that anything artificially created can be 'life'.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, being human gives us certain 'rights'. The right to food, shelter, etc. Do we extend these rights to the artificial beings we create? Any artificial beings we create will almost definitely be used for commercial purposes initially. It's doubtful we would even consider applying human rights to them.
Would they even want human rights? I doubt it. I personally don't really believe that one day sentient computers will run amok and start going against human will. I'm sure there are ways to create permanent safeguards against rebellious robot thoughts, despite what the media says.
